One of the most cost effective ways to increase the value of your home is bathroom remodeling. It can also go a long way toward improving the quality of your life and satisfaction in your home.
A lot of people understandably find the idea of undertaking a bathroom remodel a bit intimidating. That’s why we brought in Jaime Dorobek to help put you at ease by sharing what she learned doing her own bathroom renovation. Jamie and her husband are pretty fearless DIYers. Yet, even Jamie didn’t think of everything before getting the bathroom remodeling underway.
Jamie learned a lot, and she’s here with practical advice that comes from real-life experience.
You’ve made the decision to remodel your bathroom, now what?
Plan, plan, and plan some more my friend!
Starting a bathroom remodel is scary, exciting, and nerve racking, but it is all worth it in the end! And a well thought out (but, flexible) plan will keep things moving and ensure that you are always one step ahead of the game.
Here are eight tips and tricks I wish I would have known before we started our bathroom remodel adventure.
CONSIDER THESE WHEN PLANNING YOUR BATHROOM REMODEL
1. What is your time frame?
When does this project have to be finished by? Do you have another bathroom in your home to use or are you staying with a friend? I was pregnant when we did this bathroom project. So, baby was the ultimate deadline. That gave us eight weeks for our bathroom remodel. This is important to fully think out so that you can decide what parts of the remodeling project you can realistically DIY and what parts you should hire out.
2. Make a list of what will be done in your bathroom remodel.
New tiling? Lighting? Fixtures? Moving walls? Cabinets? Are adding another sink? A stand alone shower? For us, the only thing we saved was the toilet. We did a ton of demolition and even moved a wall back 6 inches to make room for a stand alone shower. This list will come in handy for the budget.
3. Find inspiration.
Start a bathroom remodel Pinterest board and collect ideas that you love. Do you want a drop-in tub? Do you love subway tile? Grout color? Different grout color for walls and floor? What about vanity lights? Stare at tons of pictures and really think about exactly what you love about that image.
4. Now that you have a list of what you want and your inspiration. Make a budget.
Also realize things come up in bathroom remodels, so give yourself some wiggle room.
5. Do you need to special order anything?
We used mostly in stock products at our local The Home Depot, but we did have to special order our sink, tub, and shower faucets, which held up the installation a few days. Also, counters and glass shower enclosures take time to order and install.
6. Don’t forget about the little things.
Where do you want outlets? Where do you need lights? How high do you want the lights? Will you have one three- light wall sconce or two two- light sconces? One or two mirrors? Where do the light switches go? Where will towel bars hang? Cabinet hardware? Do you want a built in shower and/or bathtub shelf?
It’s nice to be able to tell the electrician and plumber ahead of time exactly where you want these things to go. (We decided to install electrical outlets on either side of the long mirror.)
7. Here’s how to pick out tiles and fixtures.
Keep your Pinterest inspiration pictures in mind, and take pictures on your phone of what you like in a store.Include prices in the pictures for easy reference later.
Also, remember things like: smaller tiles equals more grout, which equals a less slippery floor, which was a huge decision maker for our floor tile choice.
8. It’s just a bathroom. Don’t stress yourself out too much.
Everything is going to be A-OK, I promise. In the end you’re going to have a brand spankin’ new bathroom to enjoy and admire for as long as you live in your house!
If you’re thinking about starting a bathroom remodel project, do it! It will be awesome.
If you’ve already made the decision to remodel, congrats! Now, plan, plan, plan! You will love the finished product!
If you’ve recently completed a bathroom remodel, high five, friend! Take a bubble bath and enjoy!
