Home Remodeling | 10 Paint Colors Set to Take Over 2016
Home Remodeling | Like the ever-evolving world of fashion, color trends in home design change from year to year. Wide shifts from bright, saturated hues to soothing neutrals are not uncommon. So what colors will be popular in 2016? We spoke with industry experts to find out. “There is a notable shift from the warm colors that have dominated in the past to a prevalence of cooler hues,” reports Mary Lawlor, color marketing manager for Kelly-Moore Paints. Expect to see softer, soothing shades of gray, green, blue, pink, and white. Here’s our round-up of top picks.
Horizon Gray KM4858
“Gray continues to take center stage for neutrals,” Mary Lawlor says. “Our Color of the Year, Horizon Gray, is an atmospheric, mid-toned gray and is the perfect understated neutral for the home.”
Fiddlehead Fern KM5160
A crisp yellow-green is among Kelly-Moore’s top choices for 2016. “This refreshing tint is just lively enough to add that necessary balance and harmony to today’s color palette,” Mary Lawlor points out.
Alabaster SW 7008
Sherwin-Williams’ Color of the Year is a classic white. “Alabaster represents a shift toward mindfulness and well-being in the home,” says Jackie Jordan, Sherwin-William’s director of color marketing. “It’s neither stark nor overly warm, but a flattering, alluring white.”
Among the trending shades of VOC-free Colorhouse paints is GLASS .02. “This gentle gray-green has an authentic feeling that calls to mind the things we cherish—heirloom pieces made of quality materials like wood, metal and leather,” says the Colorhouse team.
“AIR .07 is a hue that sits between pink and purple, both colors that suggest youth and femininity,” Colorhouse experts observe. “However, when a touch of gray fuses these two colors together, this sophisticated, androgynous color emerges.”
Simply White OC-117
Out of the more than 250 shades of white that Benjamin Moore produces, the company chose Simply White as its Color of the Year for 2016. “Simply White is the most constant in the various light sources used in today’s design environments,” says Benjamin Moore creative director Ellen O’Neill.
Paradise Found PPG 1135-5
This calming sage green is PPG’s Color of the Year. “Paradise Found appears quiet but it provides a sense of strength and organic energy that is reminiscent of natural environments,” says Dee Schlotter, PPG’s senior color marketing manager.
Blue Cloud D48-5
When describing their Color of the Year, Blue Cloud, the color team at Olympic Paints emphasizes the hue’s deep, sparkling tone. “It’s like the ocean on an impossibly clear day—an unapologetic blue that is easily noticed, self-expressive, and glamorous.”
Cappuccino White 45YY 74/073
Glidden’s top pick for 2016 is a frothy, warm white. “Cappuccino White creates a sense of delicacy that promotes wellness, balance, and peace in the home,” Glidden’s color experts say. “This elegant white pairs well with pastels and light neutrals.”
Rose Quartz and Serenity
For the first time, color trend predictors at Pantone have chosen two hues to represent their Color of the Year—the soft, seashell pink Rose Quartz and the airy sky blue of Serenity. “Joined together,” Pantone’s experts say, “Rose Quartz and Serenity reflect a soothing sense of order and peace.” – Bob Vila
