This week, Houzz, released the results of its 2015 Houzz & Home survey on home remodeling. Among the findings: Millennials—those between the ages of 25 and 34—make up 10 percent of all homeowners and follow some interesting home-renovation trends. For example, the group is more likely than others to make minor repairs or to decorate, and they share interesting opinions on when, why, and how to make those home updates.
Nino Sitchinava, principal economist at Houzz, notes that “millennial homeowners are just as active as older generations when it comes to renovating and decorating.” Here are four millennial-inspired ideas based on survey responses.
1. Tailor the Space to Make It Your Own
The most common reason millennials are motivated to renovate is their desire to customize a recently purchased house. Their advice: Don’t wait! Just because your new digs come with ugly wallpaper orhardwood floors you dislike, that doesn’t mean you’re stuck with it. Before you settle in, create the home you want to live in.
In the same thread, millennials are nearly twice as likely to decorate all interior spaces than younger baby boomers. The most common rooms decorated are living or family areas. Check out these favorite designer basics for inspiration.
2. Save Now While Thinking of the Future
Millennials are more sensitive to costs, resale value, and health considerations than older generations. In other words, they want the most bang for their bucks: to save on costs and reap the rewards later when they sell. 3. Learn How to DIY
Millennials are less likely to hire a general contractor and more likely to be influenced by a family member than a pro. While some projects require a pro, learning a few DIY fundamentals can take you far in your renovations.
4. Dress It Up With Paint
The most common planned purchase among millennial homeowners is interior and exterior paint. At TOH,we know that paint is one of the most budget-friendly ways to alter any space.
