Kitchen Remodeling | Choosing Countertops

Kitchen Remodeling | Just like fashion, home design trends come and go.  That’s one of the most exciting things about the home remodeling industry: It is constantly evolving. We see that with the introduction of new, improved countertop materials and style options. Things just keep getting better.

With all of the available choices, selecting the right countertop can be overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to be: My advice is to use your resources like Houzz and Pinterest  for style ideas and consult the experts regarding product performance.

To help simplify the selection process, I’ve broken down the pros and cons of each of the most popular countertop surface choices.

LAMINATE: This value-priced option has come a long way since it was first introduced to homes in the 1940s

  • Least expensive
  • Easy to maintain and clean
  • New colors and textures mimic granite
  • Easy to scratch and burn – must use a cutting board and trivets
  • Cannot accommodate an undermount sink

SOLID SURFACE (CORIAN): A clean, smooth look

  • Mid-range price
  • Lots of color options
  • Maintenance free – no sealing
  • Easy to scratch and burn, but it can be sanded out
  • Can look artificial

GRANITE: Worry-free and relatively low-maintenance

  • Cost has come down for standard colors
  • Price point changes depending on the movement of the granite
  • Unique one of kind pieces – every piece is mined and none are exactly alike
  • Can have different textures such as honed or leather finishes
  • Stands up to wear and tear
  • Not easily scratched and can put hot pans on the surface
  • Many varieties need to be sealed

MARBLE: An elegant choice for small areas

  • Traditional
  • Stands up to heat very well
  • Very easily stains and can chip
  • Must be sealed often
  • Not usually used in a full kitchen due to the staining that can occur – used on smaller sections like an island

QUARTZ: Becoming a very popular choice

  • Price point starts at mid-range granite
  • Lots of color options and brands
  • Very durable
  • Easy maintenance  –  does not need to be sealed – Dover Remodeling
