Home Remodeling: Tank-less Hot Water Heaters
When you are remodeling an older home take time to evaluate the hot water system. You can shrink your electricity and water bills greatly with a more efficient system. After all, estimates say that as much as 30% of a home’s energy budget is consumed by heating water.
A traditional water heater continuously heats water in the tank, regardless of whether it is being used. A tank-less hot water heater only heats water when there is demand for it. Less stored water to heat means smaller costs.
Several things to discuss with your plumber or contactor when discussing options for tank-less hot water heaters are: size, flow and fuel type. Options could include heaters for single rooms or whole-house, electric or gas, and larger flow if you expect multiple water sources running simultaneously.
Most importantly understand the cost perks. In general, a tank-less hot water heater will cost you more upfront compared to a traditional tank water heaters. However consider the cost of your unit with your ongoing operating costs. According to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy website, tank-less water heaters can be 24 to 34 percent more efficient than a traditional tank-style water heater, depending on a home’s daily demand for hot water.
